Creating and sustaining healthy workplaces

Key points from today’s key note speaker, Dr. Lilian Turner, at the 14th annual summer institute held by ASU’s Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy:

High turnover and job dissatisfaction are not uncommon in today’s workforce across all industries.  Investing in the creation and support of healthy workplaces by making work meaningful to the employee results in reduced voluntary turnover and reduced burnout.  These are insights learned from her recent research with over 700 counselors in the field of substance use disorders.

Ways to make work more meaningful include:

  • Provide opportunities for skill development (these can be in the form of training, brown bags, conferences and community learning events).  If your budget is limited you can also partner with other behavioral health or physical health providers or RBHAs for training opportunities.
  • Encourage supervisory training and establish mechanisms to reward this behavior (don’t necessarily need to be monetary rewards )
  • Reduce administrative burden as much as possible (identify paperwork burden and streamline where you can, use automated processes and systems if possible)
  • Leverage unique skills from your own workforce (your staff will not only be happy to share their knowledge but will also feel valued and empowered)
  • Create opportunities for knowledge sharing including colleague/peer to peer sharing.

Foster positive relationships at work (these have the biggest impact on stress and turnover).  You can improve by offering leadership training for your supervisors, creating teambuilding opportunities, surveying the climate often, promoting and rewarding employee’s development of others, and holding employees accountable for their interpersonal behaviors.

Please feel free to share any other ways that you have tried in your current position or organization and have been successful in making your work more meaningful (click on comment, to share).  Thank you!
